The American Heart Association's recommendation for physical activity for children greater than the age of 2 is at least 60 minutes of enjoyable moderately-intensity age appropriate physical activity. The American Heart Association states that this 60 minutes may be broken into two 30 minute or four 15 minute intervals. Running is definitely one physical activity that kids like to do naturally. Kids often run on playgrounds, in sports like soccer, playing chase/tag, or actually racing one another. Better yet, kids love to run with other family members. Exercise, with the added bonus of family time, what could be better? Often, I can even get in additional shorter runs with my son. Granted, sometimes he rides his bike while I run. But hey, still works to get in physical exercise and time shared. Local runs often have a mile "fun run" for kids to participate. For smaller kids, that might not be quite up to running a mile, Disney has fabulous kid races with age appropriate race distances for different age groups. Again, Disney kid races are family fun. One year ago, my son ran a disney race and he absolutely LOVED it! He was so excited to experience everything that I did. From picking up his race packet (see picture below) to actually running the race (200 meters for his age group at the time) while sporting an actual race bib pinned to his shirt. Oh, and the highlight?! He received a medal that he was very proud of!!! Start kids young, and perhaps they will enjoy staying physically active well into adulthood.
